BRICS Opposes EU’s CBAM

On 18th August 2026, the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, held in New Delhi under India’s chairship, adopted a joint statement opposing unilateral, punitive and protectionist climate measures such as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

What is CBAM?

  • Carbon Border Tax: CBAM requires importers to account for the carbon emissions embedded in certain carbon-intensive products entering the EU.
  • Covered Products: It currently covers iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity.
  • Objective: The EU says CBAM aims to prevent carbon leakage, where carbon-intensive production shifts to countries with weaker climate policies.
