Boreal Forests under Threat due to Warming Climate
A new study published on 30th December 2024 reveals that nearly half of the world’s boreal forests, found in cold regions like Canada, Alaska, and Siberia, are undergoing major changes due to climate warming, increasing fire risks and altering their ability to store carbon.
Highlights of the Study
- Boreal Forests are Changing: Boreal forests, which are warming at four times the global average rate, are transitioning to a new "half-open" forest state. This shift is altering tree density, carbon storage, and fire risks.
- Vulnerable to Forest Fires: Warming temperatures are reducing the growth rate of trees, making these forests more vulnerable ....
