Floating Solar Power Plants

Recently, the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) released its first comprehensive assessment estimating that India’s reservoirs can host about 102 GW of floating solar capacity.

  • Floating solar refers to solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed on floating structures over water bodies such as reservoirs, lakes, and dams.
  • It offers a land-neutral alternative to ground-mounted solar projects, helping overcome challenges related to land acquisition and competing land use.
  • NISE identified 1,946 sq. km. of feasible water surface area, assuming a maximum utilisation of 20% of any reservoir’s surface.
