Aizawl Museum Gets Repository Status

On 7th July 2026, the Natural History Museum (NHM), Mizoram University, was notified as India's 21st Designated Repository under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

  • The designation was made on the recommendation of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).
  • NHM becomes India's 21st Designated Repository.
  • The museum is located within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot.
  • It was established in 2022 under Mizoram University.

  • Safe Custody: Preserves biological materials and voucher specimens.
  • Type Specimens: Stores type specimens of newly discovered species.
  • Research Support: Facilitates taxonomy, species identification and biodiversity research.
  • Legal Registry: Maintains records of biological resources used in research and commercial activities.
