India Develops Indigenous Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrids
Recently, India developed its first high-expansion, non-GMO hybrid popcorn maize varieties, Krisna459 and Godari234, tailored to Indian tropical and soil conditions.
- Developed in Andhra Pradesh after nearly 11 years of breeding and field trials, the varieties aim to reduce India’s dependence on imported popcorn kernels.
What Makes Krisna459 and Godari234 Significant?
- Non-GMO: The varieties are developed through conventional hybrid breeding, not genetic modification.
- Hybrid Maize: Hybrids are produced by crossing selected parent plants to combine desirable traits such as yield, pest tolerance and popping quality.
