Iran’s Hara Mangrove Forests

Recently, an oil spill off Qeshm Island in Iran has threatened the Hara mangrove forests in the Persian Gulf. The spill occurred amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

What are Hara Forests?

  • Hara forests are mangrove ecosystems dominated by grey mangroves (Avicennia marina) in the Persian Gulf.
  • Location: They are found around Qeshm Island and the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Salt Tolerance: Their roots filter salt, allowing them to survive in saline water.
