Supreme Court Extends Mining Restrictions Around Wetland Reserves

On 4th August 2026, the Supreme Court clarified that mining restrictions around Asan Wetland Conservation Reserve should ensure parity across similar wetland reserves.

  • Nationwide Parity: Similar restrictions may apply to other wetland conservation reserves.
  • Expert Verification: Authorities must determine whether Asan Reserve extends into Himachal Pradesh.
  • Applicable Authority: The Standing Committee of National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) or Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) will verify the territorial issue.
