Odisha’s Coastline Faces Significant Erosion

Recently, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported that 28.3% of Odisha’s coastline faces erosion.

What is Shoreline Change?

  • Definition: Shoreline change means the movement of the boundary between land and water over time.
  • Erosion: Shoreline moves landward as coastal land is lost.
  • Accretion: Shoreline moves seaward as sediments accumulate.
  • Stable Coast: Shoreline shows no significant long-term change.
  • Natural Causes: Waves, tides, storms, cyclones and sea-level rise can alter shorelines.
  • Human Causes: Ports, seawalls, jetties, infrastructure and sand mining can modify coastlines.
