Rangelands: A $47 Trillion Global Asset

On 24th August 2026, a new report titled Rangelands Rising: Investing in Sustainable Management and Restoration was released at COP17 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

  • The report was prepared by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), GIZ, Economics of Land Degradation Initiative, UNCCD and IUCN.

Why are Rangelands Important?

  • Global Coverage: Rangelands cover about 54% of the Earth’s land surface and support nearly 500 million pastoralists.
  • Biodiversity: They contain around one-third of the world’s important biodiversity areas.
  • Economic Value: Rangelands provide an estimated $21–47 trillion annually in benefits through livestock production, biodiversity, water ....
