Karnataka Cracks Down on Online Sale of Datura as Food

Recently, the Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department took action against major online grocery and quick-commerce platforms after finding datura fruits and seeds being listed and sold as food products.

What is Datura?

  • Datura, commonly known as dhatura, is a plant associated with mythology, traditional medicine and folklore in India.
  • It is also known as “Devil’s Trumpet” because of its characteristic trumpet-shaped flowers.
  • Toxic Plant: Datura contains tropane alkaloids, which can cause serious poisoning.
  • Health Effects: Exposure can result in hallucinations, confusion, rapid heart rate, delirium, seizures and, in severe cases, death.
