India Develops Mobile Liquid Tree

On 7th July 2026, researchers at CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) developed India's first Smart Algal Liquid Tree (SALT) to improve air quality in urban areas.

What is SALT?

  • Definition: A compact air purification system using microalgae for photosynthesis.
  • Design: Houses microalgae suspended in water inside an enclosed unit.
  • Mobility: Portable system that can be deployed at different locations.
  • Power Source: Operates using solar energy or electricity.

Working Mechanism

  • Photosynthesis: Microalgae absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
  • Air Purification: Helps reduce carbon dioxide and airborne dust.
