India Develops Mobile Liquid Tree
On 7th July 2026, researchers at CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) developed India's first Smart Algal Liquid Tree (SALT) to improve air quality in urban areas.
What is SALT?
- Definition: A compact air purification system using microalgae for photosynthesis.
- Design: Houses microalgae suspended in water inside an enclosed unit.
- Mobility: Portable system that can be deployed at different locations.
- Power Source: Operates using solar energy or electricity.
Working Mechanism
- Photosynthesis: Microalgae absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
- Air Purification: Helps reduce carbon dioxide and airborne dust.
- Real-Time Monitoring: Sensors display AQI, CO₂, temperature, humidity and particulate matter.
