Borjuli Wetland Declared Biodiversity Heritage Site
In July 2026, the Borjuli Wetland in Assam was notified as a Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) for conserving wild rice (Oryza rufipogon), a valuable genetic resource for climate-resilient agriculture.
Why is Oryza rufipogon Important?
- Progenitor: It is the wild ancestor of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa).
- Disease Resistance: Naturally resistant to several pests and diseases.
- Climate Resilience: Tolerates flooding and saline conditions.
- Genetic Resource: Used to develop high-yielding and climate-resilient rice varieties.
Conservation Initiative
- Project: In-situ Conservation and Management of Wild Rice in Sonitpur, Assam.
- Funding: Supported by the National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA).
- Implementation: Executed by ICAR–NBPGR with the Assam State Biodiversity ....
