Aldrin Found in Chandraloi River

Recently, an investigation by a joint committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) found that the banned organochlorine pesticide Aldrin was present in the Chandraloi River, Kota (Rajasthan) and was linked to the deaths of mugger crocodiles.

What is Aldrin?

  • An organochlorine pesticide used for insect control.
  • Classified as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP).
  • Persists in soil and water for long periods and bioaccumulates in food chains.
  • Manufacture, import and use have been banned in India since the 1990s.
  • Listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants for global elimination.
