DRDO’s Long-Duration Scramjet Test

On 9th January 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a major breakthrough in hypersonic missile technology by successfully conducting a long-duration ground test of its Actively Cooled Scramjet Full-Scale Combustor.

What was tested?

  • An actively cooled full-scale scramjet combustor, a critical component of hypersonic cruise missiles.
  • Tested at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) Facility, in Hyderabad, designed to simulate extreme hypersonic flight conditions.
  • The test validated both the combustor design and the test infrastructure.

Why is this important?

  • Hypersonic missiles travel at Mach 5+ (over 6,100 kmph) for sustained durations.
  • Such speeds are achieved using scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet) ....
