IIT Madras Develops Ramjet-Powered Artillery Shells

Recently, researchers at IIT Madras successfully developed and tested ramjet-propelled artillery shells, designed to significantly extend the range of conventional gun systems.

  • The IIT Madras innovation integrates a ramjet engine into an existing 155 mm artillery shell, replacing the conventional base-bleed unit.
  • Unlike rocket-assisted shells, this approach extends range without compromising lethality or requiring new gun platforms.
  • Early trials on a 76 mm gun validated the concept; 155 mm tests at Deolali (Sept 2025) and Pokhran (Dec 2025) confirmed stable flight, clean exit, and ramjet ignition.
  • The technology could increase range by up to 50%, offering tactical flexibility ....
