On 16th January 2026, on the occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day, Prime Minister Shri paid homage to the versatile sage Thiruvalluvar, whose timeless works and ideals continue to inspire innumerable people across generations.

About Thiruvalluvar

  • Thiruvalluvar lived around two thousand years ago in Mylapore, which is now part of Chennai.
  • A Siddha by birth and a celebrated poet, he is popularly known as Valluvar, or more respectfully as Thiruvalluvar, meaning “the revered Valluvar.”
  • The Valluvas traditionally belonged to the Pariah community, now referred to as Harijans. Their traditional role involved announcing royal proclamations by beating drums.
