Define Arctic amplification. What are the factors contributing to Arctic amplification and its possible consequences?
Answer: Arctic amplification is a phenomenon of warming in Arctic at a rate much faster than in rest of the world.
According to Communications Earth & Environment journal of Finnish Meteorological Institute, Arctic is heating four times faster than the rest of the planet.
Factors contributing to Arctic amplification
- Global warming
- Increase in atmospheric water vapor and cloud cover
- More atmospheric heat transport from lower latitudes to higher latitudes
- Changes in oceanic heat content
- Declining sea ice and snow cover exposes less reflective surfaces- open seawater, bare ground, vegetated land-which absorb more solar radiation
- Increase in soot aerosol particles
