20 Years of Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act
On 13th September 2025, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) marked 20 years since its enactment.
- The Act, a first of its kind law in India, came into force on 26th October 2006.
Background and Need for the Act
- Before PWDVA, legal remedies for women facing domestic violence were fragmented and insufficient.
- Laws like Section 498A of IPC addressed cruelty by husbands but did not fully cover the wide spectrum of domestic abuse or provide civil remedies such as protection orders and residence rights.
