Meghalaya’s Vaccine-Derived Polio Case
In August 2024, a two-year-old child in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district tested positive for vaccine-derived polio, a rare type of polio linked to the oral polio vaccine (OPV).
Vaccine-Derived Polio Infection
- Nature of Vaccine-Derived Polio: Vaccine-derived polio is associated with the weakened poliovirus in the OPV. In rare cases, this strain can cause polio, particularly in children with weakened immune systems, despite the overall success of OPV in eradicating the disease.
