New Satellite Tanager-1 to Track Greenhouse Gases
On 16th August 2024, Tanager-1, a new satellite developed in collaboration with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other organizations, was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
- The satellite uses imaging spectrometer technology from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to track methane and carbon dioxide emissions by analyzing various wavelengths of light reflected from Earth.
- The imaging spectrometer detects spectral “fingerprints” of greenhouse gases, which helps researchers identify and quantify strong emissions of methane and carbon dioxide.
