Recently, the Committee on External Affairs submitted its report on ‘India’s Role and Presence in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions’ in the Parliament.

India’s Arctic Strategy: Key Observations and Recommendations

  • India is an Observer State in the Arctic Council, which serves as the principal intergovernmental forum for cooperation in the Arctic. However, the Committee noted that India’s observer status limits its participation in decision-making, financial contribution and direct research activities.

Recommendation: It recommended that India seek full-fledged membership when the Arctic Council reviews its membership framework.
