National Report on Deep-Sea and Distant-Water Fishery Resources

On 20th August 2026, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) released the National Report on Deep-Sea and Distant-Water Fishery Resources of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Key Findings

Deep-Sea and Mesopelagic Resources

  • The mesopelagic or “twilight zone” (200–1,000 metres) supports lanternfishes, deep-sea shrimps and cephalopods.
  • Their vertical migration contributes to the biological carbon pump, transferring carbon from surface waters to the deep ocean.
  • Deep-sea demersal surveys have identified underutilised resources such as shrimps, perches, flatfishes, eels and scombroids.

Distant-Water Fisheries

  • Important resources include tunas, billfishes, sharks, oceanic squids and Antarctic krill.
  • Biodiversity-rich areas include Kollam Bank, Angria Bank, the Mangalore deep-sea ....
