World Development Report 2026
On 4th August 2026, the World Bank released the World Development Report 2026: The Promise of AI.
- It examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping employment, productivity and development, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Key Findings
- Employment Impact: Generative AI could potentially automate 14.2% of jobs in high-income countries, compared with 4.5% in low- and middle-income countries.
- Productivity Gains: AI could enhance productivity in over 16% of existing jobs in developing economies, compared with more than 18% in advanced economies.
- Growing Inequality: AI development remains concentrated among a small number of countries and technology companies, potentially widening the global digital divide.
