It was launched by Ministry of Rural Development in 1995. It aims to minimize the adverse effect of drought and control desertification through rejuvenation of natural resources base in the identified desert areas.
More than 35 lakh hectares of area has been covered under the programme as per latest estimates. It covers approx. 235 blocks of 40 districts in 7 arid and semi-arid states.
