To ensure rural development, rural connectivity must be ensured. With this aim, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana was launched in the year 2000. It is a 100% centrally sponsored scheme under Ministry of Rural Development.
The primary objective of the scheme is to provide connectivity via all-weather roads to the unconnected habitations in rural areas with population of 500 persons or more.
As of 2019, more than 6 lakh kms. of rural roads have been constructed.
Mostly maintenance and poor quality of construction have been an issue. Proper maintenance and scientific standards should be adopted for redressal.
