Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin

It is a restructured form of Indira Awas Yojana, launched in 1996 to address housing needs of the rural areas. In 2016, with the aim of ensuring ‘Housing For All’ by 2022, PMAY was launched. It is a centrally sponsored scheme which comes under the ambit of Ministry of Rural Development.

  • As of 2019, 1.3 crore houses in rural areas have been constructed or aided (under Indira Awas Yojana & PMAY (G)). As per the target (Housing for all by 2022), the speed seems slow.
  • Some of the biggest issues with PMAY (G) are fund crunch, low-cost land availability, maintenance issues etc. To overcome, measures like adopting practical targets, fastening land acquittal, ensuring sustainability in projects etc. could be adopted.
