Raman Effect: A Revolutionary Discovery
- Monochromatic light refers to light that consists of only one colour in its spectrum.
- On February 28, 1928, Dr. C.V. Raman observed that when monochromatic light passed through a transparent medium, additional faint spectral lines appeared on either side of the main line. These lines were later named Raman Lines, and this discovery led to the celebration of National Science Day in India every year on February 28.
- The foundation for this remarkable discovery was laid in 1921, when Dr. Raman was traveling to Europe by sea and noticed the deep blue colour of the Mediterranean Sea.
