El Niño to Increase India's Electricity Demand
- According to a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), a strong El Niño during 2026–27 could compel India to generate an additional 17.7 TWh of electricity from fossil fuels.
- This additional demand will primarily result from rising cooling demand rather than reduced renewable energy generation.
- Higher temperatures could increase electricity demand by around 10 TWh, while a weak monsoon may reduce hydropower generation by 2.9 TWh and wind power generation by 4.9 TWh.
- The resulting generation gap is likely to be met by coal-based power plants, leading to an additional 17 million tonnes of CO₂ ....
