Women Redefining the Definition of Sustainable Agriculture
- Recognizing the global leadership of women in agriculture, the United Nations (UN) has declared 2026 as the 'International Year of Women Farmers'.
- According to the Economic Survey, the share of women in the Indian agricultural workforce has increased to 64.4% (2023-24), while their participation in agricultural land ownership is only 14%.
- Passed in July 2026, the 'Maharashtra Women Farmers Empowerment Act' is the first law in the country to provide legal recognition to women as independent farmers even without land ownership requirements.
