- India’s agricultural history is ancient; the development of Indus Valley Civilization cities (Dholavira, Lothal) was based on agricultural surplus. The 'Kallanai' (Grand Anicut), built by Chola ruler Karikala in the 2nd century, remains one of the world's oldest functional irrigation structures.
- At the time of independence, India's foodgrain production was a mere 5 crore tonnes. Due to scientific progress (Green Revolution) and institutional reforms, it has reached a record 37.656 crore tonnes as per the advance estimates for 2025-26.
