Rural Crafts and Handloom Traditions: From Villages to the Global Stage

  • India has around 6.4 million registered weavers and artisans. Women constitute 71% of handloom weavers and 64% of all artisans.
  • During 2023–24, India exported handicraft products worth Rs. 32,758 crore, while the textiles and apparel sector contributes nearly 2% of the country's GDP.
  • Under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), more than 100 million rural women have been organized into over 9 million Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
  • More than 650 Geographical Indications (GI Tags) have been registered in India under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to protect authentic crafts.
