The institution of ‘Lokayukata’ is five decades old but still not able to address corruption as desired. Do you think it needs overhaul? Suggest some measures.
Answer: In the wake of the recommendations of the first Administrative Reforms Commission, many State Governments enacted legislation to constitute the Lokayukta to investigate allegations or grievances arising out of the conduct of public servants including political executives, legislators, officers of the State Government, local bodies, public enterprises and other instrumentalities of Government including cooperative societies and universities.
Maharashtra was the first State to establish this institution as early as in 1972. However the institution of Lokayakuta is not uniform across the state and its jurisdiction varies from state to state. Also several states have abolished Lokayukta.
