  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) celebrated the centenary of its establishment on October 1, 2025.
  • The concept of a merit-based modern civil service in India was introduced following the 1854 report of the British Parliamentary Committee chaired by Lord Macaulay.
  • Accordingly, the Civil Service Commission was established in London in 1854, and competitive examinations began in 1855.
  • The Government of India Act, 1919, for the first time, provided for such a body in India, and on October 1, 1926, the Public Service Commission was established based on the recommendations of the Lee Commission (Royal Commission, 1924).
