India to Have Over 100 Tsunami-Ready Villages
Recently, government announced that India is set to become the first country in the Indian Ocean region to have more than 100 villages certified as tsunami-ready, marking a major milestone in community-based disaster preparedness.
Tsunami-Ready Programme
- Tsunami-ready villages are coastal communities certified for high levels of tsunami awareness, preparedness and response capacity.
- The certification is awarded under the Tsunami Ready programme of UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
- It is a voluntary, community-driven initiative that promotes preparedness through collaboration with local communities, leaders and disaster management agencies.
