India’s Rarest Pheasant Faces an Uncertain Future

Recently, conservation studies and field observations highlighted growing concerns over the survival of the Western tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus), one of India’s rarest birds.

Status and Distribution

• One of India’s rarest pheasants and the state bird of Himachal Pradesh.
• Earlier spread across Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand; now survives in small, fragmented pockets.
• Estimated 3,000-9,500 mature individuals remain, forming a single subpopulation.
• Around 25% of the population occurs in the western Himalayas and northern Pakistan.

Habitat and Threats

• Suitable climatic habitats still exist (Kazinag and Limber forests, J&K).
• Major threats:
  • Human disturbance
  • Habitat fragmentation
  • Climate variability affecting breeding cycles and food availability
• Survival remains relatively stable ....
