Approval for Maharashtra’s Leopard Birth Control Programme

  • On 17th November 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change approved Maharashtra’s proposal for a Leopard Birth Control Programme, making it the first initiative of its kind in India.
  • It will begin as a pilot project in Junnar.
  • Conservation Status of Leopard:
    • IUCN Red List: Near Threatened
    • CITES: Appendix I
    • Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972: Schedule I
