India’s First ‘Extreme Poverty-Free’ State

  • On 1st November 2025, CM Pinarayi Vijayan officially declared Kerala as free from extreme poverty.
  • As per NITI Aayog (2021), Kerala has India’s lowest poverty rate (0.7%).
  • Achievement attributed to the Extreme Poverty Eradication Project (EPEP) launched in 2021.
  • Kerala becomes:
    • India’s first state to eliminate extreme poverty
    • The second region in the world (after China) to achieve 100% eradication of extreme poverty.
