Gogabeel Lake in Bihar Added as India’s 94th Ramsar Site
Recently, Gogabeel Lake in Bihar’s Katihar district was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, increasing India’s total Ramsar sites to 94.
Gogabeel Lake and India’s Recent Additions
- Gogabeel Lake is an oxbow wetland situated between the Ganga and Mahananda rivers and becomes connected to both during floods.
- It is Bihar’s first community reserve, conserved and managed primarily by the local community, highlighting participatory conservation.
- With this addition, Bihar now has six Ramsar sites, placing it third in India after Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
- India now ranks first in Asia and third globally - after the UK (176) ....
