India to Establish National Coral Reef Research Institute

The government will set up the National Coral Reef Research Institute (NCRRI) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as India’s nodal agency for coral reef research, with an allocation of ₹120 crore.

  • The first-of-its-kind centre will be established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change at Chidiyatapu in South Andaman, focusing on advanced coral reef research, conservation and management.
  • Officials highlighted the vital role of coral reefs in providing natural coastal protection, acting as buffers against storms and helping prevent loss of life and property in vulnerable coastal regions.
