Global Cooling Demand Set to Triple by 2050
On 11th November 2025, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released Global Cooling Watch 2025 at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, warning that soaring global demand for cooling could double emissions unless countries adopt sustainable, low-carbon, and equitable cooling strategies.
Key Findings of the Report
- Global cooling demand is projected to triple by 2050, potentially doubling emissions to 7.2 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent without urgent action.
- Permanent reliance on air conditioning is rising as deadly heatwaves intensify, turning cooling into essential infrastructure.
- Over one billion people currently lack adequate access to cooling, a figure that could triple by 2050.
