Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

On 11th November 2025, India inaugurated its first 3 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) system at NTPC NETRA, Greater Noida, marking a milestone in long-duration energy storage and strengthening India’s clean-energy self-reliance.

Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB)

  • A VRFB is a long-duration energy storage system that uses liquid vanadium electrolytes instead of lithium, offering a safer, more durable, and highly scalable alternative to conventional batteries.
  • Unlike lithium-ion batteries, VRFBs rely on vanadium ions circulating through tanks, enabling long life, negligible degradation, and enhanced safety — crucial for stabilising renewable-heavy grids.
