Odd Radio Circles (ORCs)
Recently, researchers identified a highly unusual cosmic object known as an odd radio circle (ORC) using data from the LOFAR telescope network in Europe.
- ORCs are large, faint, circular radio structures typically surrounding a distant galaxy, and they remain among the least understood phenomena in deep space.
- The latest discovery - a rare double-ORC - was first spotted by a student participant, making it only the second known instance of twin ORCs and one of the most powerful observed to date.
