Fibre-Optic Drones
Recently, the wars in Ukraine and Lebanon have highlighted the growing use of fibre-optic drones, a new generation of drones that remain largely immune to electronic warfare and jamming systems.
What are Fibre-Optic Drones?
- Drones connected to their operators through fibre-optic cables instead of radio-frequency (RF) signals.
- Fibre-optic cables transmit data as light pulses through ultra-thin strands of glass or plastic.
- A spool containing the cable is attached to the drone and unwinds during flight.
How Does the Technology Work?
- The fibre-optic cable carries:
- Flight control commands from the operator.
- Real-time video and operational data from the drone.
