NASA Ends MAVEN Mission

On 3rd June 2026, NASA officially ended the mission of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft after determining that the Mars orbiter could not be recovered following a loss of contact in December 2025.

About MAVEN Mission

  • Launched: November 2013.
  • Entered Mars Orbit: 21 September 2014.
  • Mission Objective: To study the Martian upper atmosphere and understand the processes responsible for atmospheric loss.

Major Scientific Contributions of MAVEN

  • Provided the first direct evidence of atmospheric sputtering, a process through which charged solar particles strip gases from Mars' atmosphere.
