SOLAR-1 Space Weather Monitoring Satellite
In June 2026, the United States activated SOLAR-1, its first dedicated satellite for continuous space weather monitoring, after completing an eight-month testing and commissioning phase.
What is SOLAR-1?
- A dedicated space weather satellite designed to continuously monitor solar activity.
- Observes: solar winds & coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
- Operated as part of the United States' space weather early-warning network.
Key Features
- Positioned at: Lagrange Point-1 (L1), about one million miles from Earth between the Sun and Earth.
- Provides: Continuous and unobstructed monitoring of solar activity.
- Can transmit CME images to forecasters within 30 minutes, compared to up to 8 hours in earlier systems.
