MOF Material Removes Tritium Efficiently

Recently, researchers developed a Metal- Organic Framework (MOF)-based material that can efficiently separate tritium from radioactive wastewater, offering a potential solution for managing wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Why is Tritium Removal Difficult?

Tritiated Water

  • Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen.
  • It combines with oxygen to form tritiated water (HTO).
  • HTO behaves almost identically to ordinary water, making separation extremely difficult.

Existing Method

  • Tritium is currently removed mainly through water distillation.
  • The process requires very tall distillation towers and consumes large amounts of energy.

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)

  • Highly porous crystalline material made of metal ions and organic linkers.
  • Used for ....
