Euclid Telescope Discovers the Oldest Known Quasars
On 6th July 2026, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Euclid Space Telescope discovered 31 ancient quasars, including the oldest and most distant quasars ever observed, providing new insights into the early Universe while deepening the mystery of how supermassive black holes formed so rapidly.
What is a Quasar?
- A quasar (Quasi-Stellar Object) is the extremely bright core of an active galaxy powered by a supermassive black hole.
- As gas falls into the black hole, gravitational energy is converted into enormous amounts of radiation.
- A quasar can outshine its host galaxy and emit energy equivalent to trillions of Suns.
