Indian Researchers Develop New Method to Model the Topside Ionosphere

On 8th July 2026, Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) developed a novel method to reconstruct the topside ionosphere over the Indian region by integrating ground-based and space-based observations.

What is the Topside Ionosphere?

  • Upper Portion: The topside ionosphere is the upper portion of the ionosphere located above the peak electron density region.
  • Ionized Particle: It contains ionized particles (electrons and ions) that influence the propagation of radio waves.

Significance

  • LEO Satellites: Accurate knowledge of electron density in this region is essential because most Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites operate within this altitude range.
  • Strategic: Variations in electron density directly affect communication ....
