New WIPO Treaty
On 24th May, 2024, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) member states approved a new treaty addressing the intersection of intellectual property (IP), genetic resources, and traditional knowledge.
- This agreement, concluded after over two decades of negotiations, was achieved at the Diplomatic Conference held from May 13th to 24th, 2024, in Geneva (Switzerland).
Agreement Overview
- Disclosure Requirement: Patent applicants must disclose the country of origin or source of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge.
- Adoption: The treaty was adopted at WIPO headquarters in Geneva after negotiations involving 192 countries and 86 observers.
