India’s Urban Future: Towards Inclusive and Resilient Cities

On 30th July 2026, the World Resources Institute (WRI) India released a report titled Equitable, Productive, Low-Carbon and Resilient System of Cities in India.

  • Prepared at the request of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), the report presents an evidence-based roadmap for a National Urbanisation Policy (NUP).

Key Challenges in India’s Urbanisation

Hidden Urbanisation

  • India has 7,428 small towns, while several Census Towns continue to be governed as rural areas.
  • This creates a disconnect between the actual socio-economic character of settlements and their administrative status.
